Open-air schools were initiated in 1860 and maintained through the 1950s even some places it is still in practice. Kashmir where open air schools were quite popular at earlier times due to nonavailability of school building and resources. The open air schooling had its own benefits but unfortunately was limited to summer season only due to weather conditions, like rain and chilling winter.
We have seen open air schooling in Kashmir due to Covid-19 pandemic, as a method of educating children in open air in order to keep social distancing due to non availability internet, mobile and laptops.

In the early 20th century, open air schools became fairly common in Northern Europe, originally designed to prevent and combat the widespread rise of tuberculosis that occurred in the period leading up to the Second World War. Schools were built on the concept that exposure to fresh air, good ventilation and exposure to the outside were paramount.
